 SYRIA: Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem passed away at the age of 79.

Confirming the death of the Syrian foreign minister, the media said that there were no details on the cause of the death of 79-year-old Walid al-Muallem, although he had been suffering from a heart problems for many years due to which his health was deteriorating.

According to the report, Al-Muallem was first appointed foreign minister in 2006 After which he continued to serve in this ministry for a long time and also held the post of deputy prime minister of Syria.

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem was considered close to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and he was a strong supporter of the Syrian president's policies. 

According to the media, the Syrian government says that the name of the new foreign minister is being considered after the death of Walid al-Muallem. For this, his deputy and highly experienced diplomat Faisal Mekdad is likely to be appoint the foreign minister. 

The government said in a statement that Walid al-Muallem was a patriotic personality and would be buried in Damascus.

The late Walid al-Muallem, Syria's foreign minister for 14 years, was a former diplomat and also served as Syria's ambassador to the United States for nine years in the 1990s. (04)
